It’s a normal school day for 8th grader Usagi Tsukino – late for school and rushing out the door. In her hurry, she collides with a stray cat! Usagi’s kind heart forces her to stop and help the cat, but she must face the consequences at school – namely punishment from her strict teacher Ms. Haruna. Usagi’s day takes a turn for the worse when her test is returned with a dismal mark of 30.
At lunch, Juuban District Middle School’s students are abuzz with rumors of jewelry thieves and Sailor V, the soldier of love and justice who catches the thieves. Usagi’s best friend Naru is having a huge sale at her mom’s jewelry store that lures all the girls in their class – but will it attract trouble as well?
Usagi makes a series of detours on her way home: playing the new Sailor V game at the Game Crown Center, injuring a snobby stranger and then being insulted by him – and seeing that strange little cat again.
After getting home and being forced to reveal her test grade, Usagi deals with her mother’s wrath and her brother’s teasing by falling asleep!
Usagi is awakened from her sweet dreams by scratching and a strange voice – the cat has broken into her room and it can talk! The cat introduces herself as Luna, and presents Usagi with a glimmering brooch and a mission to fight evil.
With the words “Moon Prism Power Make Up!!!”, something within Usagi changes. She hears the screams of Naru being attacked by a monster and springs into action!
By the light of the moon, who will have the strength and courage to save Naru? Why has Luna appeared and chosen Usagi of all people to help her? And just who exactly is that handsome masked stranger in a tuxedo?!

Hello. First of all, I’d like to thank you for all your hard work in translating all this.
Second, I had a small question. You said you localized the currency. But how exactly does that work? What I mean is, I read that line about the ruby that was worth a million dollars.
When you say “a million dollars”, does that mean that the amount of money written in the original Japanese is equal to a million dollars, or was only the name of the currency substituted while the number remained the same from Japanese to English?
It means that I converted the value of the yen into USD, and reflected the amount in USD rather than in Yen.
For example – if something is written as costing 500 yen in the manga, I would translate that as being $5 USD. Hope that helps! :)
Yes it does, thank you so much. A one million dollar ruby, and one someone decided to name at that, and a yellow diamond. Now that I think about it, no one seems to take notice that Naru’s family seems to be loaded. If they have a ruby like that in stock (and it was 1992, so a million dollars would be worth even more) and a yellow diamond (very rare and expensive, especially if natural), then their store isn’t just big in size, it would be high end, wouldn’t you think?
I mean I don’t know exactly how the jewelry business works, but it certainly would appear that way. They may even be the premier jeweler in the city if they sell stuff like that. They may make their own jewelry.
But that’s just me letting my mind wander. I’ve never been able to read the manga before this, so thank you again for giving me the chance to do so.
Hi Miss Dream, I have a minor comment to make on a translation choice you’ve made in this act. You translate the Miss Haruna’s nickname as Miss Hard, explaining that it’s a pun on “Haruda,” but my guess is that “Hard” in Japanese might be transliterated as “haado” instead of “harudo,” since Japanese appears to borrow from British English more than it does from American English, and British English is non-rhotic (the “r” is silent) while American English is rhotic. For example, we have “haato” for “heart,” and “pawaa” for “power.” One word I know that is transliterated into rhotic and non-rhotic pronunciations is “energy,” with both “enajii” and “enerugi” as viable options, so perhaps I could be wrong.
Anyway, since this is a translation issue, it is ultimately up to you as a translator to make the decision. I just thought I’d raise this point and see what you think.

Are these the scans of the newest reprint of the manga, because the cover looks like them, but the other page says it’s the scans of the 2003 reprint? Also when will you translate the perfect edition, stalking Naoko’s website has not given me a time frame for when they will officially release one in English?

Tbh I had Sailor Moon manga, it was their last 18th volume but I lost it at school.
