Materials Collection

The Materials Collection (美少女戦士セーラームーン設定資料集) is a photo-book with all of Takeuchi Naoko’s preliminary and prototype designs of the characters specifically for animation. It includes illustrations of each character, minus monsters-of-the-day and other one-shot appearances for all five seasons of the series.

This collection is especially useful for Sailor Moon cosplayers who are looking to create the most accurate representation of a specific character’s outfit possible. Some of the prototype characters never made it into the final cut for the anime (like Diana the Moon Fairy), so this is also an interesting read for serious fans of the show.

Typesetting was done by the lovely Kuroitenshi13. Many thanks to Tsuki_Tsubasa for providing black and white page raws!

    Thank you for uploading this! MangaStyle didn’t have all the pages of this book on their site…(From Parallel Moon to the end.) And the site (I forgot the name) that had a translation of Parallel Moon, wasn’t very good quality….XD;;;;

    Hey guys,

    Upon my first reading of your translation, (which is the second I’ve read) I just had a minor tiff, (because I’m an OCD twit) with the translation.
    The kanji Naoko wrote for the ‘image colours’ of Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus are different than what you translated:
    Moon’s kanji is clearly 銀 /gin or silver,

    Secondly, I’m aware of the diverging ways the Japanese jump between orange and yellow, the kanji for Venus, which is the least legible, appears to be closer to that of 黄 (yellow), than your translation 橙 (orange).

    I didn’t know whether I should, but as you guys do such an awesome job of the translations, I thought you might appreciate the correction. ^^;;;

    Thank you for all your awesome work.

      Hey there! Thanks for pointing this out. I haven’t looked in this translation in years, and feel pretty derpy that I missed such obvious things. I’ll get this fixed as soon as possible. :D

      Nevermind! I can only view up to the “title page” for Part 5 without downloading. I just dowloading the PDF, and I can see it all.

      Oh wow! I’ve never seen that one. Was Sailor Luna also designed by Naoko Takeuchi?

    Hi! Is the comment about Kunzite being in a relationship with Zoicite included in the original text? I had heard that was a conceit of the anime and that the material collections had stated he was like a “little brother” to Kunzite. Just wondering since this is the first time I’ve noticed this.

      Same on that. I was majorly confused because the translation I read from an earlier version was that Kunzite wasn’t in a romantic relationship but it said that “I have an affection for Kunzite.”
